Baltimore Oriole is named for the colorful coat of arms sported by 17th century Lord Baltimore, this flame-colored member of the blackbird family is common in the eastern and prairie states. They have a varied diet consisting mostly of fruits and insects, but they also sip nectar from flowers and readily visit backyard oriole feeders stocked with sugar water. Attract them in spring and summer with citrus halved and displayed on a spike. Both male and female orioles have strident calls which they use to defend their territory from rivals and communicate with their mate. Their nest is a remarkable creation spun mostly from plant fibers- located at the end of a high branch. Although an oriole nest takes just a few days to build, it can last several years.
